Course Description
In this course we will be covering the six strands of language arts: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening,Viewing and Representing. We will cover these areas by using a variety of texts including short stories, novels, poetry, newspaper and magazine articles, videos, songs, TV programs and any other resources we may find relevant.

Assessment & Evaluation
The course has an assortment of learning experiences. We will have a variety of assignments and projects in four different sections: Writing Process (25%), Writing Mechanics (10%), Reading Comprehension (25%) and Critical Thinking (10%). These will be done either individually, as pairs, or in groups. There will be a final project at the end of the semester in place of an exam.
Grade Weighting
The above mentioned assignments, tests and daily work will be worth 70% of your total mark. The final project will be worth the remaining 30% of your final grade.
Expectations
  • Homework is to be done and ready to be handed in to Ms. Biehl at the beginning of the class the due date is assigned for or it will be considered late!
  • If an assignment is late, you will be docked 10% for the first three days it is late. On the fourth day the assignment will not be accepted for marks, but will need to be completed before credit will be given for the course. If you need extra time for an assignment, talk to me in advance and we will see if we can work something out. If you are absent the day an assignment is due you can hand it in the day you come back to school, not the next time we have class. It is your responsibility to complete the required course work.
  • If you have an issue with an upcoming deadline for an assignment, please speak to Ms. Biehl before the due date to arrange an alternative option.

Attendance
Full attendance is expected at all times. You will be marked late if you are not in your seat and prepared before the bell rings to start class. If for some reason you will be missing a class you are responsible to talk to Ms. Biehl to get the material you will be missing. If you have missed a class for an excusable reason (i.e. sick) you are responsible to talk to Ms. Biehl to get the materials that you have missed or find out online what is due for your next day of school.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a serious offence, and will be dealt with harshly. Consequences will be as follows: On the first occurrence, the grade on the assignment is zero until the assignment is re-written, or until a suitable alternative is arranged with the teacher (i.e. oral presentation). If it should happen a second time the student will have no chance to make up the mark and it will remain at a zero.

Behaviour
  • If I am talking (or a classmate) you are not. If you would like to talk please raise your hand!
  • Please treat others (and myself) the way you would like to be treated

Respect for your fellow classmates and teacher is expected at all times. There is a zero tolerance policy for any type of bullying. If any situation arises, other than bullying, where your behaviour is disrupting the learning of others, you will receive one warning. If the behaviour continues you will be asked to leave the class and we will discuss the consequences of your inappropriate actions. Consequences vary on the situation but may include such things as having privileges revoked in the school, making up time during lunch hours, written apologies, missing out on class activities and field trips, meetings with parents, etc.

I believe it is important for every member of the class to be a safe, respectful, and responsible member of our classroom. Please treat others the same way you would like to be treated.

Let us all choose to make this an interesting, worthwhile, and enjoyable learning experience. Good luck in the course, I look forward to working with you!
